Compact Wind Turbines
By Jerry Standefer

With the need for more alternative power sources comes the age of the compact wind turbine. Unlike their larger cousins, these small wind turbines are made for residential applications. Just like the larger wind generators, these smaller compact units can produce electricity to be used or saved for a later time. So you might ask, “how do these compact wind turbines work”? Sometimes called home wind generators, these smaller units can produce power for your home.

  • Design-The design of these small units is such as to allow for the least amount of wind to power them. Usually operating wind speeds of 10 miles per hour will start the production of electricity. Made with either 5 blade or 3 blade design, they turn a motor type generator that will produce a DC voltage to charge a bank of batteries. To prevent over-speeding they are equipped with a brake, so that at higher wind speeds they stop working.
  • Location-Newer types of small wind turbines are made to mount on the tops of houses unobstructed from trees or other buildings. Some companies are placing these smaller units in groups of two or three, mounted together forming a small wind farm. Other types are mounted on mast or poles above any wind blocking structures.
  • Cost of small wind generators-The cost of these compact wind turbines can be as little as $400 and much more depending on the output and size of the unit. There are other items that you must consider if building a small power system. Additional cost would be batteries, charge controller, inverter, and any wiring associated with the installation. Also the mast or mounting assembly can be expensive.
  • How does a small wind turbine work-The basic concept of operation starts with the wind turbine that produces electricity in the form of DC voltage. From the wind turbine you would go to what is known as a charge controller. A charge controller is an electronic device that regulates the flow of electricity to your batteries, not allowing over or under charging which will help prolong the life of your batteries. From the already mentioned batteries, an inverter is added that changes the battery voltage to usable house current to power your appliances or other electrical items.
  • Requirements-If you are thinking about installing your own residential wind turbine then you must check with your local code enforcement authorities to see if they are permitted. There may be height restrictions and other things to consider. It is always best to check first. If you are in the country then you probably have free-reign to do what you want. If you are not 100% sure about electrical installation, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to hookup your unit. Remember, safety first.

There are many things to consider about compact wind turbines. With recent increases in energy cost, people everywhere are looking for cheaper alternatives. Visit my website for more ideas and guides to help you build your own wind and solar systems.
